Realignment
Several major changes have taken in the last couple of years. The USAREUR military installations in Heidelberg and Mannheim have closed. Also, the Army installation in Bamberg and Schweinfurt have closed. USAREUR Headquarters has moved to Wiesbaden. Millions have been spent to upgrade and expand Wiesbaden facilities to accommodate the additional troops and family members. Other major facilities from these closed locations have relocated to different locations in Germany. Both AAFES and AFN Europe, for instance, haved moved to Sembach Kaserne in the Kaiserslautern area. The Grafenwoehr, Hohenfels and Vilseck areas have also undergone a large expansion with hundreds of millions of dollars spent on new exchange facilities, schools and housing areas to accommodate an increased troop presence. With the closure of Heidelberg and Mannheim the largest army communities will be in the Kaiserslautern, Wiesbaden, Stuttgart and northern Bavaria areas.
