Naval Support Activity - Souda Bay

The U.S. Naval Support Activity (NSA) Souda Bay is located on Crete, on the Greek Air Force Base near the village of Mouzouras, 17 kilometers (approximately 10 miles) east of the city of Hania (Khania). NSA occupies an area of approximately 110 acres on the north side of the air base. Some 20 officers, 274 enlisted personnel, 62 U.S civilians and 158 local national civilians are based here.

The mission of NSA Souda Bay is to extend fleet war-fighting capability through operational support to U.S., Allied and Coalition forces deployed within the EUCOM, CENTCOM and AFRICOM areas of responsibility by providing, operating and sustaining superior facilities and services dedicated to combat readiness and security of ships, aircraft, detachments and personnel. It skillfully orchestrated joint Navy and Air Force reconnaissance missions and air refueling support for Operations Desert Shield/Storm, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and other joint USN/USAF and multi-national operations.

FACILITIES AND SERVICES

Recreation

Current facilities on base are for softball, soccer, basketball, tennis, swimming, ping-pong, volleyball, mountain biking, racquetball and weight lifting. There is a large, well equipped, gymnasium and during the summer, most personnel take advantage of the numerous beautiful beaches located all around the island. There is a Tours and Travel Office (ITT) office on base, and a well-stocked library.

Education Facilities

Those interested in off-duty education may enroll in traditional classroom study through the University of Maryland and Central Texas College. Interested personnel may also enroll in non-traditional learning via accredited online universities.

DoDDS Schools

There is NO DoD-approved School in Souda Bay. Dependent children may be home-schooled using the Calvert School (grades K-8) and University of Nebraska Lincoln (HS) Correspondence Courses. They may also attend other DoDDS approved schools in Europe. Tuition may be paid/reimbursed by DoDDS depending on the status of the sponsor.

Medical Facilities

NSA Souda Bay has a small medical clinic on base which is a branch clinic of Naval Hospital, Sigonella, Sicily. The clinic staff has one family practitioner, one flight surgeon, two independent duty corpsmen, limited staff support, and one medical liaison/TRICARE coordinator.

Religious Activities

Weekly worship services are offered for Protestants. Catholics Mass is regularly available in Hania and on the first Sunday of the month at NSA. To the extent that it is possible, worship in other faiths is facilitated.

Clubs

An All-Hands Club and a Single Sailor Center provide typical club activities for off-duty personnel.

Banking

On base there is a cash branch office of Navy Federal Credit Union with an ATM, and a local bank that exchanges dollars to euros and has a euro ATM. Limited check cashing services are available on base at the NEX, MWR and Customer Service Detachment.

Housing

Adequate on-base quarters are very limited and priority is given to E-4 and below personnel. Economy housing is readily available. Souda Bay is a family member restricted tour but family members may visit during your assignment.

Lodging

Transients are lodged at an authorized hotel in the area, approximately 7-10 miles from base, usually near a base bus route.

Shopping

The Nexmart carries a good selection of the products consumers expect at an exchange. Services offered in the main store include: floral orders, gasoline coupon book sales, auto parts ordering, special orders (including items not carried in the Nexmart), catalog orders and money orders, and Armed Forces Radio & Television decoder.

MWR

The Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department has many opportunities for leisure and fitness activities, including, racquetball, tennis, softball, soccer, outdoor recreation programs and equipment rentals.
